Artist Drew Struzan designed this memorable image when on staff at Ernie Cefalu's Pacific Eye & Ear, the famed design studio who produced a number of widely-recognized covers for music industry clients including Black Sabbath's Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Iron Butterfly's Scorching Beauty and many others.

According to Ernie, "This album is one of only two albums that Drew collaborated on with another illustrator (he and Bill Garland did these final illustrations together). The "St. Valentine's Day Massacre" theme proved to be more complex than we bargained for as both of the final illustrations (the inside and outside gatefold covers) had to be changed to exclude 13 stars who were still living. To meet the deadline, we decided to use stars who were dead and had similar heights to the stars they replaced so that the new heads would fit on existing bodies in the illustration."

Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits was released in 1974 on Warner Brothers records. It features the hit singles and some B-sides of songs from their third album (Love It to Death) up through the last album with the band's original lineup (Muscle of Love) and proved to be quite successful, hitting #8 on the U.S. album charts in 1974.

The music featured on this 2-record set proves that the "father of shock rock" brought more to the stage than his over-the-top theatrics. Songs created in a wide range of styles - arena rock classics such as I'm Eighteen, School's Out and No More Mr. Nice Guy are included alongside crowd-pleasers such as Billion Dollar Babies, Hello Hooray and Desperado.

It's been said that, if it weren't for Alice Cooper's trend-setting onstage performances, the career paths of musical acts such as David Bowie, KISS, Marilyn Manson and White Zombie might have taken very different directions, and it's hard to dispute that fact.

Since parting with the original band in 1974 and legally changing his name from Vincent Furnier to Alice Cooper, Alice has released over fifteen albums since going solo (with the fantastic Welcome To My Nightmare his first release in 1975).
