Grateful Dead

From Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions to the Warlocks to the Grateful Dead. A typically strange evolution of a band's name.

Grateful Dead originally consisted of Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan and Bill Kreutzmann. The Grateful Dead were synonymous with the San Francisco/Acid Rock scene and inevitably encountered the comic book and poster artists prospering in the same environment. Always linked withe Dead will be Stanley Mouse, who's work graced a number of their albums.

In 1978 they turned to Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers artist Gilbert Shelton to create the cover for their Lowell George produced album 'Shakedown Street'.
