About Aladdin Sane

Published in 2008, this limited edition David Bowie album art print revisits the evocative artwork that captures Bowie's Aladdin Sane persona; an extension of Ziggy Stardust that incorporated the influence of rock-and-roll America. Bowie's U.S. tour the previous year had left him with somewhat mixed feelings, wanting to perform but also to retreat from the circus; Aladdin Sane was split down the middle. This is conveyed on the cover of Aladdin Sane by the glittering lightning bolt that bisects the singer's face, though Bowie would later tell friends that the "lad insane" of the album's title track was inspired by his brother Terry, who had been diagnosed as a schizophrenic. The photograph is by the late Brian Duffy and the design by the studio partnership of Duffy and Celia Philo, Duffy Design Concepts. Bowie's make up was created by Pierre Laroche with Philip Castle's iconic airbrush work completing the collaboration. Stories abound about the cover's production, with costs allegedly rocketing under management's instruction so the record company would be more obliged to push it. Its legacy is an image of extraordinary iconographic power. This is a very special print, beautifully made and flamboyantly countersigned by David Bowie himself. Due to the popularity of this edition, particularly during the V&A's landmark Bowie Is exhibition, it is now very rare.
