About KooKoo

This archival inkjet print was produced by H.R. Giger and published by Hypergallery not long before Giger's untimely death in 2014. Only 30 prints were signed by H. R. Giger. Also signed by Debbie Harry and Chris Stein, it is a fantastic piece of work for fans of the music and artist alike. KooKoo was Debbie Harry's solo debut, recorded while Harry and (then boyfriend) Chris Stein were taking a year long break from Blondie. H.R. Giger's artwork for KooKoo was based on a photograph of Harry taken by the renowned photographer Brian Aris. Giger created several variations of the cover (another of which is seen on the album's inner sleeve) in what Debbie Harry described as a combination of punk, acupuncture and sci-fi. Harry stated that the album title actually came to her after she saw Giger's completed work - it was an integral part of the album project, for her. For the promotion of KooKoo, Chrysalis Records planned to display large posters of the album cover in various stations of the London Underground but officials deemed the image of Harry with metal skewers going through her face and neck to be too disturbing. Promo videos were made for the tracks Backfired and Now I Know You Know, both directed by Giger and filmed at his studio in Switzerland. Backfired featured a dark-haired Harry dancing superimposed over a backdrop of Giger's distinctive artwork, with Giger himself appearing in a semi-translucent face mask. Now I Know You Know featured Harry in a long black wig and a form-fitting bodysuit painted with Giger's unusual artwork, dancing around in a small set furnished with Giger's "bio-mechanical" design work. This print is the result and record of a fantastic collaborative project during a significant creative period for Debbie Harry, at a key moment in her career as a solo artist. It was printed with archival inks onto an Innova Soft Textured cotton paper by Kunstdruck Atelier, Densbüren, Switzerland under the supervision of H.R. Giger.
