About Mambo for Cats

Mambo for Cats is a limited edition silkscreen print of one of the best-known album cover illustrations by Jim Flora for an album that featured Damiron, Don Elliott, Noro Morales, Perez Prado,Tony Martinez, Al Romero and their orchestras: Mambo for Cats, RCA Victor (1955). The liner notes by Bill Zeitung as noted in Hip Wax's Liner-Note Jukebox (hipwax.com/liners/mambo) read "Man, it's time to bolt down the furniture and kick back the rugs. This is no time to be a drag - let down your hair, roll up those trousers and start swingin'! This is the righteous stuff for all you jazzbos - mambo for cats - and, man, if you're not a jumpin', rockin', screamin' cat by the time this record ends, there's just no hope - you're dead." Produced in 2008 by Minneapolis print and design studio Aesthetic Apparatus, the prints have been created using Flora archivist Barbara Economon's digital restoration of a vintage printer's proof. They measure 20" x 20", much larger than the album version, and use three acrylic screen printing inks meticulously matched to Flora's original colors on archival 100-pound off-white cover stock. Each print is numbered on the front and authenticated on the reverse with stamped seals from Jim Flora Art LLC (a Flora family enterprise) and Aesthetic Apparatus. The trademark Flora signature, which did not appear on the LP cover, has been added in the lower right. Only one print from this popular edition now remains on the primary market! #198/200. We also have one Artist Proof, #24/25.
