About Jesus Christ Superstar

We acquired just one of these limited edition archival inkjet prints when they were published in 2010 - this is the only one available. The print beautifully shows off the album cover art that Ernie Cefalu designed for Jesus Christ Superstar Angels. The artwork has been highly rendered in gold inks on a rich brown background. Ernie Cefalu designed this memorable image at Pacific Eye & Ear, the famed design studio who produced a number of widely recognised album covers for music industry clients, including Black Sabbath's Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. This print has a beautiful look and tactical feel to it, providing a welcome elegance that the original two colour version lacks somewhat. A musical by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice, Jesus Christ Superstar was a re-interpretation of the Gospels According to John and dramatised the events of the last week in the life of Christ: the relationships between Jesus, his followers and the people and players in Roman Empire-occupied Jerusalem. While it may not have been the first record billed as a "rock opera" (this honour probably going to Tommy by The Who), Jesus Christ Superstar was certainly the first on such a scale, and its success laid the groundwork for those to follow. Released on Decca/MCA records October, 1970, the record was an international smash, first in the UK and then in the USA, hitting #1 on the Billboard charts in 1971. It featured a stellar cast of players including Deep Purple's Ian Gillian (purveyor of the best falsetto scream in Rock for many years) as Christ, Murray Head as Judas, and Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene. The album's success served as a launching pad for numerous stage productions on Broadway and in London's West End. The first stage production on Broadway (directed by Tom O'Horgan) debuted in October, 1971. The play received a total of 7 Tony, Drama Desk and Theatre World nominations in 1972 along with a Drama Desk Award for Andrew Lloyd Webber as Most Promising Composer! Ernie recalls, "Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber were both really genuine and positively thrilled with what we had done." We are thrilled with this print and very happy to be able to offer it here. Printed on premium semi-matte photo paper stock and numbered in black pencil in the lower left-hand margin by Ernie Cefalu, each print comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Ernie Cefalu.
