About Shaking The Tree

Shaking The Tree is one of a collection of limited edition archival inkjet prints published to celebrate a catalogue of truly remarkable and unique soundworks by Peter Gabriel. It is also a very rare example of a publication approved by the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation yet not produced by them. Hypergallery and Real World are privileged to have received that approval, and consider it a great honour to have a Mapplethorpe work in our collection. The original photo session with Peter Gabriel was at Mapplethorpe's New York loft studio at which Mapplethorpe spent some time getting to know Peter, and during the session got him talking about many subjects of which he was passionate. Mapplethorpe explained that he felt his subjects revealed more of themselves when talking about things they loved. At a time when many portrait artists were looking for vulnerability, Mapplethorpe was looking for confidence. The photo selected for the album cover was initially used for the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine. This print brings a wonderful softness to the quiet, poised quality of the photograph, and includes the wide border, faithfully to the album cover design. Shaking The Tree comprises two editions: a smaller print (the edition of 100) and a larger print (the edition of 25). Every print in this collection has been signed by Peter Gabriel himself.
